Mediterranean Mussels Vs Green Mussels

Mussels are a beloved seafood delicacy found across the globe, Mediterranean and green mussels are two of the most widely cultivated and consumed mussel species worldwide. While both are valued for their sustainability, taste, and nutritional benefits, they differ in several key aspects:

  • Origins

The green mussels, also known as New Zealand green lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus), are native to the pristine coastal waters of New Zealand. They hold cultural significance for the “Maori” people and are a major export product.

Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) are a species of mussel native to the Mediterranean Sea but now widely distributed in coastal waters around the world. Our Whales Cove Mussels are an important species for aquaculture and commercial harvesting due to their fast growth, adaptability, and high meat yield.

  • Habitat and Farming

Green Mussels thrive in clean, cold waters and are primarily farmed using environmentally friendly longline aquaculture methods in New Zealand. This farming method ensures minimal impact on the surrounding marine ecosystems.

Mediterranean mussels attaches to hard surfaces in intertidal and subtidal zones, using strong byssal threads. We grow them using suspending long ropes horizontally in the water column, secured to buoys on the surface and anchored at the seabed.

  • Physical Characteristics and Taste

Green Mussels:

  • They measure about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm). Their smooth, elongated shells have a vibrant green edge, also called lip.

  • Taste: Mild and sweet with a tender yet firm texture.

Blue Mussels:

  • Can grow up to 12 cm (4.7 in) but we commonly harvested at 6–8 cm. They have a dark blue to black shell that is smooth and elongated,

  • Taste: Touch of sweetness balanced by the clean, fresh aroma of the sea finished with a buttery texture.

Culinary uses

Green mussels are often served as the centerpiece of a dish. They’re commonly steamed, grilled, or baked and are featured in dishes like: grilled green mussels with cheese or garlic butter, green mussel chowder, thai green curry with mussels.

Mediterranean mussels like our Whales Cove, are popular in European and Mediterranean and are more versatile. Popular preparations include: steamed mussels in white wine, garlic, and herbs (moules marinières), mussel soups and chowders, added to paellas or pasta dishes.

  • Where to Find Them

Green Mussels predominantly sold in regions with access to New Zealand exports. They’re commonly available fresh, frozen, or cooked in Asia-Pacific countries, North America, and Europe.

Mediterranean mussels are more widely available due to their global distribution. They can be found in seafood markets and supermarkets across North America, Europe, and even parts of Asia, South America and South Africa. Frozen or pre-cooked options are also widely sold. We harvest fresh Mediterranean Mussels in northwest Mexico, at Ensenada, Baja California.
