Whales Cove Mussels!

When selecting mussels for your culinary creations, Black Mussels are a popular and versatile choice. At Baja Shellfish Farms, we take pride in offering Whales Cove Mediterranean Mussels, an even more premium variety known for its exceptional qualities.

In this blog, we’ll delve into the distinctions between our Whales Cove Mediterranean Mussels and other varieties, including Black Mussels, Green Mussels, and PEI Mussels, to help you choose the perfect option for your next seafood dish.

What Are Black Mussels?

Black Mussels are renowned for their sleek, dark shells and tender meat. They have a slightly sweet flavor and a delicate texture, making them a favorite in many kitchens. Whether steamed, grilled, or added into seafood stews, Black Mussels are versatile and can easily adapt to various culinary styles.

While Black Mussels have their own appeal, exploring other mussel varieties can open new culinary possibilities. Here’s how they compare:

Mediterranean Mussels (Whales Cove Mussels)

Whales Cove Mediterranean Mussels

Mediterranean Mussels, like our Whales Cove Mussels, offer a unique experience. These mussels have a rich, full-bodied flavor and a clean ocean aroma that is well-known. Their slightly larger size and buttery texture make them a delightful addition to a variety of dishes.

You can use them in a variety of dishes, ranging from the least fancy all the way to Michelling-starred. Our family has been growing and selling these mussels in the clean waters of the Baja Peninsula for more 32 years!

Green Mussels

Green Mussels, with their distinctive green-lipped shells, are a well-loved variety from New Zealand. Farmers normally freeze them instead of keeping them fresh, but sometimes they fly them directly. People appreciate their size and mild, sweet flavor, making them an excellent choice for hearty, substantial dishes. Green Mussels provide a different texture and taste profile that can be a great match for recipes that require a more pronounced, firmer bite.

PEI Mussels

Prince Edward Island (PEI) Mussels are another favorite, known for their small, tender meat. Canadian farmers farm PEI Mussels in the cold, clean waters of Canada. They are always the same size and quality, perfect for delicate and refined dishes. Their strong & intense ocean taste is a preferred choice for some but others prefer a more subtle and sweet taste.

This setup keeps them in a well-oxygenated environment and reduces environmental impact. The rope-growing method helps our mussels thrive and taste amazing by creating the perfect conditions and keeping sediment away.
